Eight Definitions of Philanthropy and Social Responsible Investing

Entrepreneurs and established organizations in the for-profit sector and the not-for-profit sector are revisiting existing models, and exploring new models of social enterprise.

The application of the best practices from all sectors is providing increasing value. Income generation, acquisition of capital, profitability, and institutional growth are issues that are becoming more important among non-profits seeking to optimize their contribution.

In the same way, many businesses are considering their social and environmental impact, and the role they play in enhancing the quality of life in the communities they serve and employ.

Some businesses have begun by reducing the negative impacts of their activities, particularly in relation to the environment (i.e. recycling, staff training, and purchasing policies). Others seek to positively impact their communities and personnel through local investments in the community, or progressive hiring and benefits policies (i.e. job creation, philanthropic contributions, and infrastructure development). Others make positive social impact the direct outcome of their products and services (i.e. solar energy, job training, water treatment equipment, biomedical technology, and alternative energy generation).

The emerging forms of non-profit and for-profit entities, and the wide-ranging social impacts each generates, warrants careful definitions. This is particularly important in that each entity must identify and establish reliable sources of money and other resources to operate and thrive, and each category is different.

A recent study defines eight categories, split between non-profit and for-profit, and compares their Financial ROI (F-ROI), as well as their Sustainable ROI (S-ROI). Of the eight forms, Conscious Capital will concentrate its efforts in Social Investing:
